Mocingbird's research team has verified and validated the most up-to-date CME requirements with the Florida Board of Medicine. Here is a quick summary of things you must know:

License Renewal Cycle Time for Florida:

  • Florida state license renewals are due every 2 years at midnight of January 31. 
    • Group 1 expires on even-numbered years; Group 2 expires on odd-numbered years.
  • Requirements for MDs and DOs are different. The CME requirements listed above are only for MD state license renewals.  

Board Rule Checklist: Florida Board of Medicine (ONLY MDs): 

  • Complete 40 general hours of CME 
    • Due: Every 2 years at license renewal 
  • Of the 40 hour total, complete 2 hours of medical error CME
    • Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
  • Of the 40 hour total, complete 2 hours of domestic violence CME 
    • Due: Every third biennial (every 6 years)
  • Of the 40 hour total, complete 1 hour of human trafficking CME 
    • Due: By 1/1/2021, however if you are newly licensed past this date, this task is due once at your next license renewal 
  • For those who prescribe with controlled substance registrations (CSR): complete 2 hour course in prescribing controlled substances
    • Due: Every 2 years at CSR license renewal 
  • If renewing license for the first time: complete one hour of AMA PRA Category 1 CME in HIV/AIDS 
    • Due: Once at first license renewal 

Florida State Specific Requirements: 

  • There are 5 state specific requirements:
  1. Medical Error CME: Licensees going for their state license renewal must complete at least 2 hours of CME in medical error. This includes a study of root cause analysis, error reduction & prevention, and patient safety. The course must include information relating to the five most mis-diagonsed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by the Board. This is due every 2 years at license renewal, and can be included in the 40 hour total credits. 
  2. Domestic Violence CME: Licensees must complete 2 hours of CME in domestic violence every third biennium (6 years). This may be included towards the 40 credit total. 
  3. Human Trafficking CME: Of the 40 credit total, licensees going for their state license renewal must complete at least 1 hour of human trafficking CME. This is due once. 
  4. Controlled Substance CME: For those prescribers with controlled substance registrations (CSR), complete a board-approved 2 hour course in prescribing controlled substances. This must be completed every 2 years at license renewal, and these hours may NOT be included in the 40 credit total requirement. 
  5. HIV/AIDS Training: For those who are renewing their initial license, complete 1 hour of AMA PRA Category 1 CME in HIV/AIDS . This is due at your first license renewal, and may be included in the 40 credit total requirement.
