Mocingbird's research team has verified and validated the most up-to-date CME requirements with the North Carolina Medical Board. Here is a quick summary of things you must know:

License Renewal Cycle Time for North Carolina

  • North Carolina state licenses for MDs and DOs must be renewed annually on the licensee’s birth date.
  • The license renewal cycle and requirements are the same for MDs and DOs.

Board Rule Checklist: North Carolina Medical Board (MD/DO)

  • Complete 60 hours of Category 1 CME
    • Due date: Every 3 years
  •  If you provide controlled substances to patients: Of the 60 hours total of CME, complete 3 hours of CME in controlled substance prescribing practices
    • Due date: Every 3 years

North Carolina State Specific Requirements

  • There is one state specific requirement:
  1.  Controlled Substances CME: If you prescribe, order, supply, administer, or otherwise provide controlled substances to patients, you must complete 3 hours of CME in controlled substance prescribing practices. This is counted towards the 60 hour total requirement of CME.
  • Additional information to note: Although state licenses are renewed every year, licensees must complete 60 hours of continuing medical education over a 3 year cycle. Excess CME credits earned in the 3 year cycle cannot be rolled over to the next cycle, they can only be used to fulfill the credits in that cycle.

Example:

If you earn 80 CME credits in the 3 year cycle, that extra 20 cannot be rolled over into the next cycle. Only 60 will be counted for the 3 year cycle.
