License Renewal Cycle Time for Tennessee

  • Tennessee state licenses for MDs and DOs must be renewed every 2 years.
  • The license renewal cycle and requirements are the same for MDs and DOs.

Board Rule Checklist: State of Tennessee (MDs/DOs)

  • Complete 40 hours of Category 1 CME 
    • Due date: every 2 years on December 31 prior to license renewal 
  • Of the 40 hours, complete 2 hours of CME in controlled substance prescribing 
    • Due date: every 2 years on December 31 prior to license renewal 
  • If you are ABMS board certified in the following specialties: pain management, anesthesiology, physical medicine, and rehabilitation, neurology, or rheumatology: You do not need to comply with completing the 2 hours of CME in controlled substance prescribing 
  • If you are meeting the requirements of MOC for an ABMS Board: You do not need to comply with completing the 40 hours of Category 1 CME credits 

Additional Information to Note: 

  • CME must be completed in the 2 years before license renewal year
    • Example: If your medical license is renewed in September 2019, you must complete the 40 hours of CME between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018
