License Renewal Cycle Time for Virginia (MDs/DOs):

  • State licenses in the state of Virginia are due bi-annually, during licensee’s birth month. 


If born in December, and last renewal was in December 2020, a licensee would renew their license in December 2022.

Board Rule Checklist: Virginia Board of Medicine (MDs/DOs): 

  • Complete 60 hours of continuing learning activities 
    • Due: every 2 years at license expiration 
  • Of the 60 hour total, complete 30 hours in Type 1 activities 
    • Due: every 2 years at license expiration  
  • For those who perform office-based anesthesia: 
    • Due: every 2 years at license expiration
    • Of the 60 hour total, complete 4 hours of CE in topics related to anesthesia
  • For those who have prescriptive authority:
    • Of the 60 hour total, complete 2 hours of Type 1 CE related to pain management, the responsible prescribing of controlled substances, and the diagnosis and management of addictionDue: Every 2 years at license expiration
